悼亡疊至

秋風摧老木，

寒雨打孤舟。

一慟未收淚，

新墳又入眸。

肝腸煎日夜，

魂魄散春秋。

欲問天何極，

殘燈照白頭。

Layers of Mourning

The autumn wind withers the ancient tree.

Cold rain lashes the solitary boat.

One bout of grief, tears scarcely dried,

A fresh grave rises before the eyes.

This body boils day and night,

The ethereal soul scatters through spring and fall.

I wish to ask heaven, where is its limit?

A sputtering candle shines upon a weary head.

Parallelism and Imagery

In regulated verse, the middle two couplets' lines 3–4 and 5–6 must exhibit strict parallelism (duìzhàng). Every element in the first line of the couplet must find a direct counterpart in the second line in terms of part of speech, syntactic structure, and often conceptual opposition or complementarity. This structural requirement is used to encrypt the experience of bereavement overload and physiological collapse.

First Couplet (Lines 1–2)

秋風摧老木，寒雨打孤舟。

This couplet establishes the context through seasonal and natural imagery. Autumn (qiū) is the traditional season of decline and mourning. The “ancient tree” (lǎo mù) represents the aging self, no longer flexible, vulnerable to snapping. The “solitary boat” (gū zhōu) evokes isolation, a common metaphor for the soul adrift after loss. The parallelism here is loose (the poem’s opening couplet often is), but it sets the tone of external devastation mirroring internal desolation.

Second Couplet (Lines 3–4)

一慟未收淚，新墳又入眸。

This is the first of the two parallel couplets. It translates directly to the clinical definition of bereavement overload: the individual has not yet finished the acute grief of one loss (yī tòng—one bout of anguish) when the next loss (xīn fén—fresh grave) appears.

The parallelism:

Number yī (one) xīn (new — functioning as a temporal quantifier)

Noun tòng (grief) fén (grave)

Verb phrase wèi shōu lèi (not yet collected tears) yòu rù móu (again enters the eyes)

The couplet creates a temporal trap. The word wèi (not yet) in line 3 contrasts with yòu (again) in line 4, establishing the rapid succession that defines overload. The tears of the first loss have no time to be shed fully before the eyes are forced to register another grave. In clinical terms, this is the failure of the mourning process to complete before a new stressor activates the HPA axis again.

Third Couplet (Lines 5–6)

肝腸煎日夜，魂魄散春秋。

This couplet moves from external events (losses) to internal somatic and spiritual disintegration. It encodes the breakdown of the HPA axis using traditional Chinese medical and philosophical concepts that align strikingly with modern endocrinology.

The parallelism:

Organ pair gān cháng (liver and intestines) hún pò (ethereal and corporeal souls)

Verb jiān (to simmer, to torture with heat) sàn (to scatter, to disperse)

Temporal unit rì yè (day and night—the circadian cycle) chūn qiū (spring and autumn—the yearly cycle)

肝腸 (gān cháng): In traditional Chinese medicine, the liver (gān) stores the hún (ethereal soul) and is responsible for the smooth flow of qi. Liver qi stagnation is the classic diagnosis for chronic stress and unresolved grief. The intestines (cháng) are now understood to be intimately connected to the HPA axis via the gut-brain axis; chronic stress disrupts gut function and inflammation. The verb jiān (to simmer) evokes the hypercortisolism phase, the body cooking in its own stress hormones.

魂魄 (hún pò): In Chinese philosophy, hún is the ethereal soul that ascends after death, while pò is the corporeal soul tied to the physical body. Their scattering (sàn) represents the disintegration of the self. This corresponds to the clinical transition from HPA axis hyperactivity to exhaustion, the state where the individual feels fragmented, emotionally numb, and physically depleted.

日夜 / 春秋 (rì yè / chūn qiū): The temporal parallel is critical. Day and night represent the loss of circadian rhythm, the hallmark of HPA axis dysregulation, where cortisol no longer follows its proper diurnal pattern. Spring and autumn represent the loss of seasonal renewal. The bereaved individual no longer experiences the cycle of life but exists in a perpetual state of decay. Together, the couplet says that the body’s internal timekeeping has been destroyed at every scale.

Fourth Couplet (Lines 7–8)

欲問天何極，殘燈照白頭。

The final couplet moves away from parallelism and toward resolution. The speaker asks heaven (tiān) where the limit is—a rhetorical question implying there is none. The final image, cán dēng (guttering candle or dying lamp), is a conventional metaphor for the end of life. The bái tóu (white-haired head) signifies both age and the premature aging wrought by chronic stress.

The liver is not merely an organ but the seat of anger and the smooth flow of emotion; the soul is not abstract but anchored in visceral experience. This holistic view aligns remarkably well with contemporary understanding of the HPA axis as a bridge between psychological stress and physiological disease.

The parallelism in the middle couplets serves more than an aesthetic function. By placing the external losses (second couplet) in perfect structural alignment with the internal disintegration (third couplet), the poem enacts the mechanism it describes: external stressors and internal dysregulation become mirror images, each reinforcing the other with no escape from the formal structure, just as the bereaved individual finds no escape from the cycle of loss and physiological collapse.

Explanation of the Chinese Poetic Craftsmanship

Chinese poetry is different from Western style poetry. There are different rules and expectations utilized in the crafting of a classical Chinese poem. One of the most difficult aspects of creating Chinese poetry for a non-native speaker is tone. Mandarin is a tonal language. Classical Chinese poetry follows very specific rule sets in regard to character and tone. Tones have to be precise so when spoken or sung, the poem is lilting and melodic.

Tonal Parallelism (平仄对仗)

This poem follows a 七言绝句 Qiyan Jueju structure.

Each line has seven characters with careful attention to level (平, ping) and oblique (仄, ze) tones.

Couplet 1 - Lines 1 & 2: “清风逐云 (平平仄平)” contrasts with “大地沉影 (仄仄平仄)”. The verbs “掩 (to veil)” and “入 (to enter)” create dynamic opposition.

Couplet 2 - Lines 3 & 4: “梦寻归处 (仄平平仄)” pairs with “共赏花落 (仄仄平仄)”. The pronouns “与君 (with you)” and the action “知春 (know spring)” form a conceptual parallel.

Semantic Parallelism (语义对仗)

First Couplet (Sky Scene): “清风 (soft breeze)” pairs with “大地 (great earth)” (heaven vs. earth). “逐云 (herds clouds)” opposes “沉影 (sinks shadows)” (upward vs. downward motion). “玉盘 (jade plate, the moon)” is mirrored by “夜寒 (night’s cold)” (celestial object vs. terrestrial sensation).

Second Couplet (Heart’s Desire): “梦寻 (dream-seek)” parallels “共赏 (together-appreciate)”. “归处 (place of return)” pairs with “春残 (spring’s end)”, implying a journey through time. The core wish “与君看 (to watch with you)” is fulfilled in the shared understanding of “知春残 (knowing spring’s end together).

I hope this helps you understand a little more about the creation of Classical Chinese poetry. My poem is by no means perfect form. I too am relatively new to writing Classical Chinese poetry. It is also a learning curve for me.

These take me a few weeks of work to get the structure and tones correct. They also do not translate to English word for word. There is more use of traditional Chinese cultural symbolism, historical references, and idioms that are not found in regular speech in the Western world. Direct translation is often not possible.

Story of Emperor Xuanzong here

The Song of Everlasting Sorrow by Bai Juyi

The Song of Everlasting Sorrow, a narrative poem by poet Bai Juyi (772-846) of the Tang dynasty (618-907). The poem recounts the tragic story of Emperor Xuanzong (reigned 712-756), whose excessive love for his beautiful concubine, Yang Guifei (circa 720-756), led to intrigue at court and disorder in the empire. Yang Guifei was put to death in 756 during the An Lushan uprising.

Bai Juyi’s poem “The Song of Everlasting Sorrow” (长恨歌, Cháng hèn gē), with examples from the original Chinese text provided first, followed by English translations.

“The Song of Everlasting Sorrow”

Bai Juyi’s “The Song of Everlasting Sorrow” recounts the tragic love story between Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and his consort, Yang Yuhuan. It intertwines themes of imperial luxury, political turmoil, and longing beyond death, he describes the beauty of love, its destruction, and the eternal regret that follows. The greatest love story of ancient China, that destroyed a kingdom and fascinated poets for centuries.

The poem can be divided into three themed parts…

Part 1: Blissful Favor and Love

Yuan Guifei's Story

This section of the poem depicts the emperor’s extreme devotion to Yang Guifei (Consort Yang) and their life of indulgence within the palace.

“回眸一笑百媚生，六宫粉黛无颜色”

“She turned her head and smiled, a hundred charms; All the painted ladies at the Six Palaces seemed without color.”

This verse illustrates Yang Guifei’s peerless beauty that captivated the emperor.

“春宵苦短日高起，从此君王不早朝。”

“The spring nights were too short, the sun would rise too soon; From this point on, the lord no longer held early court.”

This verse describes how the emperor’s infatuation led him to neglect his imperial duties.

Part 2: Blissful Favor and Love

The An Lushan Rebellion erupts, violence and devastation is everywhere. The dynasty is on the verge of falling apart completely, forcing the emperor to have Yang Guifei executed at Mawei Slope, turning the tale into a stark tragedy. Her death was the price for support of the emperor. Yang Guifei was blamed exclusively for the destruction of the kingdom due to her interference that led the emperor to decadence and not rule as he had during the golden years.

“六军不发无奈何，宛转蛾眉马前死。”

“The army would not march, what could be done? Lovely brows knitting, she died before the horses.”

This verse describes the mutiny of the troops and the forced death of Yang Guifei.

“君王掩面救不得，回看血泪相和流。”

“The emperor covered his face, he could not save her; When he turned to look, blood and tears flowed together.”

This verse captures the emperor’s utter powerlessness and profound grief.

Part 3 -Endless Longing and Regret

After returning to the capital, the emperor is consumed by endless 思念 (sī niàn, longing/remembrance) and grief. He seeks a Taoist sorcerer to find her spirit, expressing a sorrow that transcends life and death.

“悠悠生死别经年，魂魄不曾来入梦。”

“Endlessly, separated by life and death for years; Her spirit never once visited him in his dreams.”

This verse expresses the emperor’s despair at being unable to even reunite with her in his dreams.

“在天愿作比翼鸟，在地愿为连理枝”

“In heaven, we vow to be birds flying side-by-side; On earth, branches of two trees intertwined.”

This is the poem’s most famous line, representing their ideal of eternal union, which makes the reality of their separation even more poignant.

“天长地久有时尽，此恨绵绵无绝期”

“Heaven is eternal, Earth is long-lasting; but both shall end. Yet this sorrow stretches on forever, without cease.”

This final couplet gives the poem its name, elevating their personal grief into a timeless, everlasting regret.

“The Song of Everlasting Sorrow” is both a lament for a historical tragedy and a profound exploration of love, loss, and the enduring nature of sorrow.

This poem is incredibly beautiful, read in Chinese and English. It flows like a song pure, full of love, tragedy, and then longing. I only highlighted a few verses. The Full Poem is here. A brief synopsis.

Tang Dynasty 700 BCE-800 BCE

The Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE), often regarded as a pinnacle of Chinese civilization, experienced profound transformations between 700 and 800 CE. The climax of the “Golden Age” under Emperor Xuanzong, followed by destabilizing rebellions, numerous natural disasters, economic decline, and social unrest. The dissidence of centralized governance, cosmopolitan trade networks, and philosophical debates laid the groundwork for China’s later imperial identity, even as the dynasty grappled with fragmentation, wars, and economic instability. The Tang Dynasty’s 8th century marked a turning point in Chinese history. The era was characterized by contradictions: unparalleled cultural achievements coexisted with political decay, while religious pluralism flourished alongside Confucianism. There are six inner connected themes that define the 8^th century of the Tang Dynasty: imperial leadership and rebellions, natural disasters, economic restructuring, educational philosophies, religious-superstitious practices, and the evolution of poetry.

Education System

The Tang education system was centered on Confucian classics. Mastery of texts like the Analects and Classic of Poetry was essential for passing the rigorous Imperial exams, which tested literary skill and philosophical understanding. “The great Tang families revered the Confucian cannon as the intellectual embodiment of the imperial state and the social hierarchy.”[1] While wealthier elites still held advantages, the system theoretically allowed talent from modest backgrounds to be promoted in society by their literary talent. “The Confucian Canon sanctioned almost all of the important activities in which the state was involved and almost every policy that the dynasty formulated; Indeed, the very activity of governing was traced back to canonical sources. They were quoted in the context of politically critical questions, such as the management of Barbarians, and for issues central to the prestige of the ruling house, such as the maintenance of the ancestral temple”[2] Education became a societal cornerstone, interweaving with governance as well as social standing, and reinforcing Confucianism as the state ideology. State-sponsored schools in Chang’ an promoted Confucian classics, poetry and civil discourse. Buddhist monasteries provided alternative education, particularly in literature and medicine.[3]

Years of dedicated study were required to achieve success in the imperial exams. “From its inception, the Tang state undertook measures to ensure the textual correctness of the Canon and its exegetical literature. In 630 Emperor Taizong, concerned that “the classics are remote from the sage [Confucius], their texts confused and mistaken,” ordered the great scholar Yan Shigu (581-645) to establish definitive texts of the five canons: Change, documents (Shu), Odes (shi), rites, (Spring and Autumn Annuals (Chunqiu) with the Zuo Commentary.”[4] This was to ensure continuity of scholarship and to create statesmen of value for the dynasty. However, the aristocratic families who were largely the beneficiaries of official positions did not take study as diligently as those of the less fortunate classes. “Most scholars studied the canonical texts just enough to secure official posts which depended only on some memorization for the exams and to perform necessary rituals at home or in the court. The state was interested in ensuring that standardized versions of the texts were available and that these were read in a manner compatible with the dynasty’s interests.”[5] This was not a system of meritocracy but a system of nepotism and instead of creating men of virtue and value, the dynasty was staying stagnant in its vison of education. However, without useful virtuous men, the bureaucracy from the education system was deemed to falter. Post-rebellion, the decline of state institutions allowed for the rise of private academies. In response, the Tang court increasingly relied on the imperial examination system to recruit officials.

Tang Poetry

Tang poetry is one of the dynasty’s greatest cultural achievements. Despite political decline, the Golden Age ideal can be known as a cultural archetype. Styles of poetry went through many variations. Empress Wu introduced a poetic composition into “the jinshi[i] examination in 680 that marked a key moment of transformation from court poetry to a more lyrical style.”[6] After Emperor Xuanzong reduced political interference in imperial relatives court poetry evolved into capital poetry.[7] “capital poetry remained less a fine art than a refined arm of social discourse that helped to establish personal ties among members of the bureaucracy and examination candidates.”[8] Song and lyrical poetry was also prevalent especially in the capital and cosmopolitan centers. “Women were also the primary performers of music and song in the imperial court, local government offices, and elite homes. Emperor Juan John created a palace music school where hundreds of musicians and singers learned to perform new music, including popular and foreign songs. The emperor himself composed songs with an irregular number of characters per line, perhaps reflecting the influence of foreign tunes.”[9]

The early 8th-century celebrates some of China’s most famous literary geniuses. Wang Wei (699-761) “a poetic prodigy an offspring of a leading family, Wang found a place at court at a young age and mastered the art of court poetry. He then refined it by simplifying its style, elevating its antipathy towards emotions into their complete negation through the Buddhism he espoused, and perfecting the art of the couplet by replacing the elaborate ingenuity with simple statements rich in implication.”[10] Li Bai (701–762) romantic and spontaneous, his poetry full of Taoist freedom and frontier heroism, embodying the Golden Age’s optimism. Du Fu (712–770), a witness to the An Lushan Rebellion, chronicled societal collapse and criticized the government with Confucian idealism and depth of emotion. He comprehended all the ancient styles and sweep, combined each modern special achievement… since there have been poets, there has never been Du Fu’s equal.”[11] Li Bo also known as China’s greatest poetic personality. “Li Bo always evinced a signature energy and excess. Even his celebrated songs about drinking revolved around the drinker. Similarly, his poems on immortals became advertisements for himself.”[12] Poetry was a cultural lifeform of its own. No longer was it only for government litigation purposes. It had become a living breathing cultural entity during the Tang dynasty.

Religious Practices of the Tang Dynasty

Religious pluralism defined Tang spirituality. “Daoist was the most exalted religion in Tang China, owing to the imperial families claim to be descendants of Laozi who had become a central Daoist deity.”[13] Esoteric Buddhism flourished under Amoghavajra (705–774), a Sri Lankan monk who performed rituals for the court.[14] “Although Daoism was officially the highest religion of Tang China, Buddhism remained the most popular and influential faith. Along with Daoism, Buddhism also became a fundamental part of the political order and the economy, sponsored and regulated by the state.”[15] State Daoism, however, faced challenges after Xuanzong’s reign, as Buddhist monasteries’ wealth provoked backlash, culminating in anti-monastic edicts under Daizong. Superstitions permeated all society. Celestial omens, such as comets, were meticulously recorded in court annals, while Daoist alchemists sought elixirs of immortality. Manichaeism and Nestorian Christianity, had small communities.[16]

Natural disasters And Fiscal Reforms

Natural disasters exacerbated the Tang’s political woes. Chronic droughts in the 730’s disrupted agriculture in the Yellow River basin [17], while locust plagues in Dezong’s reign triggered widespread famine. Continued strife and boarder conflicts drained the treasury as well. These disasters depleted the state’s relief mechanisms, prompting economic innovation. The 780 Two Tax System (liangshui fa), replacing the defunct equal-field system, shifted taxation to biannual levies on property and harvests, which reflected a pragmatic adaptation to post-rebellion decentralization. “For the first time in Chinese history, the government attempted to base tax revenue on actual measurements of individuals wealth and property. A second feature of the new system was to allocate different tax quotas to different Providences.” [18] Dezong’s fiscal reforms, including salt monopolies and the Two Tax System, aimed to stabilize state revenue and bring power back to the central government. [19] However, provincial governors retained control over local resources, perpetuating economic decentralization and sparking further rebellions. This shift from a centralized, land-based economy to a hybrid system exacerbated the Tang’s decline.

Pre-755 Tang China thrived as Eurasia’s commercial crossroads. “In the north the greatest concentration of foreign merchants was in the two capitals especially Chang ‘an then, which was the end point of the silk roads and the grand canal.” [20] Chang ‘an, a cosmopolitan metropolis of over one million, welcomed Sogdian merchants, Persian artisans, and Nestorian monks. [21] The Grand Canal integrated the Yangtze Delta’s rice surplus with northern markets, invited trade of all kinds and encouraged artisans of foreign countries to visit and engage in cultural exchange. “Dancers from foreign lands were major figures in Tang culture, whose poetry is full of references to young boys and women performing exotic dances in their distinctive native costumes.” [22] The An Lushan Rebellion disrupted overland Silk Road trade, enabling the Uighur Khaganate to monopolize Central Asian commerce in exchange for military support. Maritime trade expanded via Guangzhou (Canton), where Arab and Persian ships dominated Indian Ocean routes. [23] Before rebellion in the early years of the Tang dynasty, China was a blooming country with wide open foreign policy, expansive trade, diverse cultural experience, and wealth. After the rebellions, especially the devastating An Lushan Rebellion, the next forty years the dynasty was unable to recover its glory and resume its governance.

Wang Xizhi: The Sage and His Formative Brush

In the modern world of digital fonts and disposable text, Wang Xizhi reminds us that writing can be a profound art form, one worth pursuing. It is a physical act, a meditation, which connects the mind, the body, and the natural world. It is also mentioned repeated in The Analects by Confucius as a skill worth mastering as well as virtue of character.

Wang Xizhi shows in his writing that true mastery is not only the form, about perfect lines: but about putting your whole spirit into the work as well. His influence was so immense that for over a thousand years in China, if you wanted to learn calligraphy, you started by copying Wang Xizhi. His style became the gold standard, the foundation of calligraphic artistic tradition. He was not just a talented artist; he was a teacher for centuries.

Wang Xizhi (303-361 CE), Jin Dynasty, was a general, statesman, and calligrapher. His most famous work “Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion” (Lantingli xu) was created in approximately 353 CE, and became one of the most copied, practiced and admired. He was fluently proficient in multiple Chinese calligraphic scripts, however his is most famous for his cursive and semi-cursive styles. He was an ardent Taoist, which is one of his greatest assets to his calligraphy. Wang Xizhi used nature as his muse.

His works embody the natural world as seen in his abstract brushstrokes. This artistic concept became central to Chinese aesthetic theory. Chinese calligraphy has always drawn inspiration from nature, but Wang Xizhi’s genius lay in his ability to suggest natural forms without literally depicting them. (“Chinese Calligraphy”)

“This practice aligns with the concept of the “embodied image,” where the calligraphic stroke is not just a line but a vessel containing the spirit and form of living things.” (Sturman)

Scholar Shi-yee Liu notes, “the theme of “Wang Xizhi Watching Geese” was revisited by painters like Qian Xuan to symbolize a refined, scholarly engagement with nature.” (Liu 36). His cursive script is a landscape of brush and ink, where the essence of a goose’s neck or the power of a warrior’s arm is felt in the varied pressure and speed of his brush. (Liu 36-28)

The finest quality of Wang Xizhi’s cursive script, was his ability to infuse it with a dep sense of vibrant, rhythmic life that broke away from earlier traditions. The more rigid and formal clerical and seal scripts were regulated with strict rules of structure and form. His cursive script is defined by its speed, fluidity, and connectivity between strokes.

Wang Xizhi was the first to perfect this style. He created characters that seemed energetic, dancing across the page. “His work is celebrated for its “vigorous and elegant style,” where “every stroke…is alive with energy and movement” (“Wang Xizhi”). This was not a haphazard scribbling; it was a controlled, artistic release of power, energy, and emotion.

Wang Xizhi’s title as a sage is a direct reflection of his enduring influence, which both imperial and pedagogical, shaped the canon of Chinese art. He became the standard which all future calligraphy was measured. His dynamic style, rhythm and vitality showed his Taoist beliefs expressively through his brush strokes. Wang Xizhi used an embodiment of natural forms in abstract lines, which cultivated a sense of energy qi, which made his work seem alive.

This was an unparalleled influence that resonated with centuries of Chinese imperial courts, statesmen and scholars. He demonstrated through his calligraphy that a brushstroke could contain a universe of meaning and emotion. He was able to transform calligraphy into a meditation on life and the Natural order. His pieces flow in a cyclic rendition of life, transformation, death, and rebirth.

The lines in his most famous work, the “Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion” in running script, incorporates these cursive principles, demonstrating a flow that feels both spontaneous and perfectly balanced, capturing a moment of inspired creativity.

Tang Poetry

Tang poetry is one of the dynasty’s greatest cultural achievements. Despite political decline, the Golden Age ideal can be known as a cultural archetype. Styles of poetry went through many variations. Empress Wu introduced a poetic composition into “the jinshi [i] examination in 680 that marked a key moment of transformation from court poetry to a more lyrical style.”[1] After Emperor Xuanzong reduced political interference in imperial relatives’ court poetry evolved into capital poetry.[2] “Capital poetry remained less a fine art than a refined arm of social discourse that helped to establish personal ties among members of the bureaucracy and examination candidates.” [3]

Song and lyrical poetry were also prevalent especially in the capital and cosmopolitan centers. “Women were also the primary performers of music and song in the imperial court, local government offices, and elite homes. Emperor Xuanzong created a palace music school where hundreds of musicians and singers learned to perform new music, including popular and foreign songs. The emperor himself composed songs with an irregular number of characters per line, perhaps reflecting the influence of foreign tunes.” [4]

The early 8th-century celebrates some of China’s most famous literary geniuses. Wang Wei (699-761) “a poetic prodigy an offspring of a leading family, Wang found a place at court at a young age and mastered the art of court poetry. He then refined it by simplifying its style, elevating its antipathy towards emotions into their complete negation through the Buddhism he espoused, and perfecting the art of the couplet by replacing the elaborate ingenuity with simple statements rich in implication.” [5]

Li Bai (701–762) romantic and spontaneous, his poetry full of Taoist freedom and frontier heroism, embodying the Golden Age’s optimism. Du Fu (712–770), a witness to the An Lushan Rebellion, chronicled societal collapse and criticized the government with Confucian idealism and depth of emotion. He comprehended all the ancient styles and sweep, combined each modern special achievement… since there have been poets, there has never been Du Fu’s equal.” [6]

Li Bo also known as China’s greatest poetic personality. “Li Bo always evinced a signature energy and excess. Even his celebrated songs about drinking revolved around the drinker. Similarly, his poems on immortals became advertisements for himself.” [7]

Poetry was a cultural lifeform of its own. No longer was it only for government litigation purposes. It had become a living breathing cultural entity during the Tang dynasty.
